User Manual

How to use each Ledge feature and where to set it up. Items marked Pro need Ledge Pro (new installs get a 7-day free trial).

Getting Started

Install

  1. On the home page, click "Free Download". You get a zip file. Double-click it to unzip Ledge.app.
  2. Drag Ledge.app into the Applications folder. It works from other places too, but the Finder context menu only shows up when it's in Applications.
  3. Double-click to open it. Ledge has no Dock icon. Once it's running, a scissors icon appears in the menu bar at the top right of the screen.

Requirements: macOS 14 or later. Works on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

First Steps

  • Copy something, then press ⌘⇧C to see what you just copied.
  • You can also click the scissors icon in the menu bar. Settings are under "Preferences…" at the bottom of the popup, or press ⌘, while the popup is open.
  • To start Ledge when you log in, turn on Settings → General → Launch at Login.
  • Can't find a setting? Use "Search Settings" at the top left of the Settings window.
  • Change the app language in Settings → General → Language: Follow System, Simplified Chinese, or English. Restart Ledge after changing it.

Permissions

Ledge doesn't ask for a pile of permissions up front. It asks only when you use a feature that needs one. They're all in System Settings → Privacy & Security. Find the matching item and turn Ledge on.

PermissionUsed by
AccessibilityAuto-paste after selecting, voice input, text selection actions, Keyboard & Mouse Sharing, reverse scrolling, keyboard sounds, menu bar icon management, Popup Blocker
Screen RecordingScreenshot and pin, screenshot and upload, screen recording, menu bar icon management, remote control, virtual display
MicrophoneVoice input, Quick Notes voice recording
Local NetworkKeyboard & Mouse Sharing, LAN file sharing, scanner, DNS check
CalendarsShowing events in the calendar widget
Full Disk AccessClearing Safari cache and history, letting disk scan see all folders (works without it, but some folders stay hidden)

Turned a permission on but it still doesn't work? In System Settings, turn Ledge off and on again, or remove it with the minus button and add it back, then restart Ledge. You may need to do this once in a while after an update.

Updates

Ledge checks for a new version once a day and lets you know when one is out. You can also check by hand in Settings → General → Check for Updates….

Free and Pro

  • From the first launch, all Pro features are free to try for 7 days (except sync). Settings → Ledge Pro shows how many days are left.
  • When the trial ends, Ledge goes back to the free version. None of your data is deleted.
  • When you use a Pro feature, a prompt appears. You can click "Buy Pro" or "Enter License" right there.
  • Items marked Pro in this manual are Pro features. The full list is under "What's in Pro" on the Ledge Pro page.

Buy and Activate

  1. Pick a plan on the pricing page and pay. All three plans have the same features. They differ only in how long you get free updates (1 year, 3 years, lifetime). You pay once. No auto-renewal.
  2. After payment, the page shows your license right away. It's a block of text starting with -----BEGIN LEDGE LICENSE-----. Click "Copy License". It's a good idea to save a copy in Notes or a password manager.
  3. Open Settings → Ledge Pro, paste the whole block into the "Activate" box, and click "Activate". You can also click "Load from File…" and pick a license file.
  4. When you see "Ledge Pro Activated", you're done. Activation works offline.
  • One license covers up to 3 of your own Macs. After switching Macs or reinstalling macOS, just paste the same license again.
  • Lost your license? Email support@ledgetools.com with your payment receipt and we'll send you a new copy.
  • You can get a refund within 14 days, no questions asked. See the refund policy. The license stops working after a refund.

When Your Update Period Ends

With the 1-year or 3-year plan, the version you already have keeps working forever after it ends. You just won't get newer versions. To keep getting updates, go to the renewal page, paste your old license, and renew for a year. You'll get a new license. Paste it in to activate. The lifetime plan never needs renewing.

Clipboard History

Ledge remembers the text, links, images, files and color values you copy, so you can find them and paste them again any time.

Open the Popup

  • Press ⌘⇧C, or click the Ledge icon in the menu bar.
  • Choose where the popup appears in Settings → Appearance → Popup Position: under the menu bar icon (default), at the mouse pointer, in the center of the current window, or in the center of the screen.
  • Press Esc to close. If you have several items selected, the first press clears the selection. If the search box has text, the first press clears it. Press again to close.

Paste

  • Click an item, or pick it with the arrow keys and press Return. It's pasted into the app you were using.
  • ⌘1 to ⌘9: paste item 1 to 9 directly.
  • Hold ⌥⇧ while choosing: paste as plain text, without the original fonts and colors.
  • ⌘ + Return: copy only, don't paste.
  • To always paste plain text, turn on Settings → General → Behavior → Paste as Plain Text.

Auto-paste needs the Accessibility permission for Ledge. See Permissions. Without it, the item is only copied and you need to press ⌘V yourself.

  • Just start typing in the popup to search. Matching text is shown in bold (you can switch to color or underline in Appearance → Highlight Matches).
  • Choose how search works in Settings → General → Search:
    • Mixed (default): keyword search plus search by meaning, with both results combined Pro
    • Exact: must contain exactly what you typed
    • Fuzzy: the letters just need to be in order, with other letters allowed in between
    • Regex: search with a regular expression
    • Semantic: search by meaning only. For example, searching "address" finds "88 Caoxi North Road" Pro
Without Pro, Mixed and Semantic fall back to Exact.
  • Ledge reads the text inside images in the background, so you can search for words in screenshots and photos too.
  • The row of tabs under the search box filters by type: All, Text, Links, Images, Files, Colors, Voice, Notes, Wallpapers. Swipe left or right when there are many tabs.
  • You can also type kind:image, kind:link, kind:file, kind:text, kind:color or kind:dictation in the search box. It works the same as clicking a tab.

Preview

Hover over an item for a moment (1.5 seconds by default, change it in Appearance → Preview Delay) to see the full content: the whole text, a large image, and any text found in the image. At the bottom you can see which app it was copied from, when it was first and last copied, and how many times.

Multi-Select and Merge Paste

  • Hold ⌘ and click several items, or hold ⇧ and click to select a range. "Merge Paste" appears at the bottom and pastes them all as one block of text. Only text and links can be multi-selected.
  • Choose what goes between items in General → Merge Paste → Separator: new line (default), space, comma, or your own.

Pin Items You Use Often

  • Right-click and choose "Pin", or press ⌥P. Pinned items are never cleared automatically and sit at the top by default (move them to the bottom in Appearance → Pinned Items Position).
  • In Settings → History & Privacy → Pinned Items, you can edit each pinned item's title and content, and give each one a shortcut that pastes it with one press. Handy for email addresses, street addresses and canned replies.
  • Right-click "Rename…" to give any item a name that's easy to remember.

Drag Items Out

You can drag items straight into other apps or Finder. Text drags out as text, images as PNG, and files as the original file.

Right-Click Menu

Every item can be pinned, renamed, copied only, or deleted. Each type also has its own options:

TypeWhat you can do
Text, links Pin to Screen (turns it into a floating sticky note);
Paste As…: uppercase, lowercase, camelCase, snake_case, Pinyin (with or without tones), trim spaces, remove line breaks, format / minify JSON, URL encode / decode, Base64 encode / decode, fix garbled text, table to Feishu format (drag to reorder in General → Paste As…);
Translate: Baidu or Google web translation, or AI translation Pro;
Make QR Code; Custom Commands Pro; Send to File Box Pro
Images Pin to Screen; Recognize Text (OCR); Scan QR Code; Compress Image;
Upload to Image Hosting, or upload and copy as Markdown / HTML / URL Pro;
Add to Wallpaper Library Pro; Send to File Box Pro
Files Copy File To… / Move File To… (set up your common folders in Settings → Files & Context Menu);
Cut (then press ⌥⌘V in Finder to finish the move); Move to Trash;
Copy File Name, Copy Path, Rename, Get Info, Open With;
Compress to zip / 7z, Extract; image and video files also get "Media Tools" (compress, trim, extract frames)
FoldersAll of the above, plus "New File" (create Word, Excel, Markdown and other files from templates) and "Open in Terminal"

Recognize Text in Images

Right-click an image and choose "Recognize Text (OCR)" to open the OCR window. You can run it again or copy the result with one click. There are three ways to recognize text:

  • On-device: uses the Mac's built-in text recognition. Works offline and is free.
  • Multimodal AI model: uses the model you set up in Settings → AI. Better with complex layouts and handwriting Pro
  • MinerU: good for tables and formulas. Needs a MinerU token on the AI settings page Pro

History and Privacy

Settings → History & Privacy

How Much to Keep and How to Sort

  • Save: separate switches for files, images and text. Turn off any type you don't want recorded.
  • Count: up to 200 items by default, adjustable up to 100,000. The space used is shown next to it. When the limit is reached, the oldest items are deleted (pinned items are kept).
  • Sort By: last copied time (default), first copied time, or number of copies.
  • Backup: "Export History…" saves everything to one file (including pinned items and images). "Import…" brings it back and skips duplicates. Useful when moving to a new Mac.

Content You Don't Want Recorded

  • Ignore Apps: click "Choose Apps…" to pick apps that shouldn't be recorded, such as banking apps or password managers. You can also flip it to record only the apps in the list.
  • Ignore Types: passwords copied from password managers like 1Password are already skipped by default.
  • Ignore Regex: text that matches a pattern isn't recorded. For example, ^ghp_\w+$ keeps GitHub tokens out.

Pause and Clear

  • Hold ⌥ and click the menu bar icon to pause recording. The icon changes. Click again to resume.
  • Hold ⌥⇧ and click the menu bar icon to skip just the next copy. Handy when you copy a password once.
  • You can have Ledge clear history when it quits (pinned items are kept), and clear the system clipboard too.
  • Ledge asks before clearing history by default. You can check "Don't ask again".

Files and Context Menu

Ledge adds a set of handy actions to the Finder context menu. File items in clipboard history get the same set when you right-click them. These menu items have the Ledge icon in front so you can tell them apart.

Settings → Files & Context Menu

Turn On the Finder Context Menu

  1. Make sure Ledge.app is in the Applications folder.
  2. Open System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions, find "Finder" (or "File Providers / Finder Extensions") under Extensions, and check Ledge. On macOS 14 it's in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Extensions → Finder Extensions.
  3. Open a new Finder window and right-click. The menu is there.

If Ledge isn't running when you click a menu item, it opens Ledge first and then runs the action.

What You Can Do

  • New File: right-click a folder or empty space in a folder → "New File" to create TXT, Markdown, RTF, XML, JSON, HTML, Word, Excel, PPT, or WPS Writer / Spreadsheets / Presentation files. In Settings you can turn types on or off, rename them, and add your own template files (such as a company weekly report). You can also have new files open right away.
  • Copy File To… / Move File To…: send files to a common folder in one step. Downloads, Pictures, Music, Movies and Documents are there by default, and you can add more.
  • Cut: right-click and cut, then press ⌥⌘V in the target folder to move it (⌘V makes a copy instead).
  • Copy File Name, Copy Path, Get Info (name, type, size, created and modified time, with one-click copy).
  • Compress, Extract: compress to zip or 7z; extract zip, the tar family, rar and 7z. No extra software needed.
  • Open in Terminal: open this folder in Terminal.
  • Open With App: open the selected files with a chosen app; click on empty space to just launch that app. The first time, Ledge lists apps you use often. You can add or remove them in Settings.
  • Media Tools: right-click images, GIFs and videos to compress, trim or extract frames. Image compression is free; video and GIF need Pro
  • Translate, Make QR Code: in the right-click menu of text items in clipboard history.

You can turn off any menu item you don't need in Settings, and also turn off the menu icons and the done sound.

Custom Commands Pro

Add your own commands to the right-click menu of clipboard items, such as "convert this file to mp3 with ffmpeg". For each command you can set:

  • A name and the command to run (runs in zsh)
  • Which items it applies to: files, text, or all
  • What to do with the output: nothing, show it in a window, or put it on the clipboard

Use these variables in the command to get the item's content: $CLIP_PATH (file path), $CLIP_PATHS (multiple paths), $CLIP_DIR (containing folder), $CLIP_TEXT (text).

Keyboard and Mouse

Settings → Keyboard & Mouse, with three tabs at the top: Key Sounds, Scrolling, Keyboard & Mouse Sharing

Key Sounds

  • Turn on "Enable Key Sounds" to hear a sound with every key press. Sounds include mechanical keyboard, piano, soft and typewriter. You can set the volume and preview them.
  • It only plays sounds and never records what you type. Typing in password fields makes no sound.
  • Needs the Accessibility permission.

Scroll Direction

Want "natural" scrolling on the trackpad but classic scrolling on the mouse wheel? Turn on "Enable Scroll Reverser", then check which devices to reverse (trackpad, mouse) and which directions (vertical, horizontal). "Step Size" sets how far each notch of the mouse wheel scrolls. Needs the Accessibility permission. After granting it, turn the switch off and on once.

Keyboard & Mouse Sharing Pro

Control several Macs on the same local network with one keyboard and mouse. Move the mouse to the edge of the screen and it goes to the other Mac. The keyboard follows, and so does whatever you copied (images up to 30MB, files up to 200MB at a time).

  1. On the Mac with the keyboard and mouse: set "Role" to "Host", click "Add Device…", and you get a 6-digit pairing code (valid for 10 minutes, works once). Note the "This Mac's Address" shown there.
  2. On the other Mac: set "Role" to "Client", enter the host address and pairing code, and click "Pair and Connect".
  3. Back on the host, in "Screen Arrangement", drag the other Mac's box to the left, right, top or bottom of this Mac, matching where the two computers really sit.
  • For each client you can choose "Pass Through" (the mouse moves over and controls it) or "Extended Display" (use it as a second screen for the host).
  • Remote Control: on the host, click "Remote Control" next to a device to see and use its screen in a window. The client must first set "Allow Host to Control This Mac" to "Ask Every Time" or "Always Allow".
  • Privacy Mode: when the client turns on "Allow Host to Turn On Privacy Mode", its screen can go black during remote control, so people nearby can't see what you're doing.
  • Press Esc twice on the client's keyboard to leave Extended Display or Privacy Mode.
  • Control stuck? Press ⌃⌥⌘Esc to force the mouse and keyboard back to the host.
  • The client can check "Keep this Mac awake while connected to the host" so it doesn't fall asleep while you use it.
  • All data between the Macs is encrypted. Both Macs need the Accessibility permission. Remote control and Extended Display also need Screen Recording on the client. The first time you connect, macOS may ask about Local Network access. Choose Allow.

Work Journal Pro

Settings → Work Journal; view records in Toolbox → Work Journal

Records which apps you use each day and for how long, then builds a timeline, daily reports and habit insights. Data stays on your Mac and is never uploaded.

  • Turn on "Enable Work Journal" to start. No keyboard or mouse activity for over 5 minutes counts as "Away" (set 1 to 60 minutes). Watching videos or being in a meeting, when the screen stays awake, doesn't count as away.
  • Don't want to record for a while? Click "Pause Recording". The clipboard popup has this button at the bottom too.
  • "Record Window Titles" gives more detail (such as which web page you were on in the browser). Needs the Accessibility permission.
  • Excluded Apps: add apps you don't want recorded. They show up only as "Excluded". Password managers are excluded by default.
  • Category Rules: map apps or keywords in window titles to a category, and mark it as Focused Work, Regular Work, Neutral, Personal or Distracting. You can also right-click on the timeline and choose "Assign to Category" to add a rule.
  • Daily Report: can be generated automatically each day after 6 PM, or by hand with "Generate Daily Report" and "Generate Habit Summary" in the viewer. Reports use the model set up in AI settings.
  • The viewer has three tabs: Timeline, Daily Report and Habits. You can see active time, focus score, time per category, and a heatmap of the whole year. To drop a day, click "Delete This Day's Records".
  • Detailed records are kept for 400 days by default.

Desktop

Settings → Desktop, with three tabs at the top: Wallpaper, Widgets, Sticky Notes

Sticky Notes

Small notes that float on your screen for jotting things down.

  • Create: click "New Sticky Note" in Settings; right-click text in clipboard history and choose "Pin to Screen"; or set a shortcut for "New Blank Sticky Note" (Settings → Shortcuts → Sticky Notes).
  • Double-click a note to edit it. Markdown is supported, and the note shows the formatted version when you're not editing.
  • Three buttons in the title bar: collapse to one line, change color, hide.
  • The "…" menu lets you copy the content, mark it done, change opacity and font size, change stacking order, delete, and set a due time (in 1 hour, 8 PM tonight, 9 AM tomorrow, or pick your own). You get a notification at that time, and the note shows "Overdue" once it has passed.
  • A note can stay on top of everything, act like a normal window, or sit on the desktop.
  • Finding hidden notes: Settings → Desktop → Sticky Notes → All Notes. You can show any of them again. You can also set a shortcut for "Show/Hide All Sticky Notes".
  • "Export Sticky Notes…" saves all notes as Markdown files.

Desktop Widgets

Small widgets on your desktop. They sit above desktop icons and below app windows, so they stay out of your way. Turn on a widget in Settings, then drag it on the desktop to where you want it. Right-click a widget to lock its position, hide it, or open its settings.

WidgetWhat it does
ClockDigital clock with date and weekday. Use "Add Another Clock" to set a different time zone for each one. Search for "New York", "Tokyo" and so on.
WeatherCurrent weather and the next three days. Enter a city name in Settings (Chinese or English).
PomodoroWork / break cycle timer with a notification when time is up. Click the gear to set the work and break lengths.
CalendarEvents for today and the next two days. Allow Ledge to access your calendar the first time.
System Status ProCPU, memory, disk, read/write speed, battery, temperature, plus one-click memory cleanup.
Pinned Cards ProPuts pinned clipboard items on your desktop. Click to copy, hold ⌥ and click to paste.
Screen Recording ProOne-click screen recording. See "Screen Recording" below.

The free version can show 2 widgets at once. Pro has no limit.

Screen Recording Pro

  • Start from the recording widget or Toolbox → Screen Recording. Record the full screen, or choose "Area": drag a box, move or resize it, press Return to start, or Esc to cancel.
  • A 3-second countdown runs before recording by default. Click again to stop and save.
  • You can set resolution, frame rate (30 by default), quality, and whether to show the mouse pointer.
  • Recordings are saved in the Movies folder, named "Ledge Recording + time". Needs the Screen Recording permission.

Screen Pin

Pin an image on top of everything on screen, so you can compare or copy from it easily.

  • Right-click an image in clipboard history and choose "Pin to Screen", or set shortcuts for "Pin Clipboard Image" and "Screenshot and Pin" in Settings → Shortcuts → Screen Pin. Screenshot and Pin lets you select an area of the screen and needs the Screen Recording permission.
  • Drag to move it, scroll to zoom, double-click or press Esc to close. Right-click to copy, save as, change opacity, or reset to original size.

Color Picker

Open Toolbox → Color Picker, or set a shortcut in Settings → Shortcuts → Color Picker. Click any point on screen with the magnifier. The color value is copied and added to clipboard history (under the "Colors" tab). Copy format can be #RRGGBB, rgb(), NSColor or SwiftUI code.

Wallpaper Pro

  • Online wallpapers: click "Browse Online Wallpapers…" to pick from Unsplash, Bing, 360 Wallpaper and Android wallpapers, with search (for example "mountains" or "cat"). "Set as Desktop" also saves it to your local library. Unsplash needs a free Access Key (click "Sign Up…" next to it to get one). The other sources work without it.
  • Local library: images you put in the "Wallpaper Library Folder" are added automatically. You can also right-click an image in clipboard history and choose "Add to Wallpaper Library". Hover over a thumbnail to set it as the desktop, for this screen only, or for all desktops.
  • Multiple screens: a different image for each screen, or one image stretched across all of them.
  • Auto change: turn on "Rotate Wallpaper", then pick an interval (5 minutes to 1 day) and in order or random.
  • Hide the notch: adds a black strip at the top of the wallpaper so the notch is less visible. By default it applies only to the MacBook's built-in screen.

External Display Brightness Pro

Drag the slider in Toolbox → Display Brightness to change an external monitor's brightness, without reaching for the buttons on the back of the monitor. A few monitors don't let a computer change their brightness. You'll see a message if so.

Virtual Display

In Toolbox → Virtual Display. Adds an "invisible screen". In meetings, share only this screen and nobody sees your other windows.

  • Click "New", give it a name, pick a resolution (or enter width and height), and check "HiDPI" for sharper text.
  • In the list you can turn each screen on or off, preview, edit or delete it.
  • "Create at Startup" is for a Mac mini used remotely with no monitor attached. It needs macOS automatic login turned on (not available with FileVault on).
  • "Enable HiDPI on Regular Displays": lets lower-resolution external screens use the sharp mode too. After the change, Ledge asks "Does the display look right?". If you don't click "Keep", it switches back after a few seconds.
  • Screens messed up and can't find your windows? Press ⌃⌥⌘0 to remove all virtual screens at once.

Toolbox

Settings → Toolbox. Click "Edit Order" to drag the tiles into the order you like.

Quick Notes

Ideas, to-dos and meeting recordings, saved as Markdown files on your Mac.

  • Set a shortcut in Settings → Shortcuts → Quick Notes (for example ⌃⌥N). Press it to open a small window. Just type. Lines starting with - [ ] are to-dos. Press ⌘ + Return to save.
  • Click "Start Recording" to record a meeting or a voice memo. When you stop, it's turned into text. First install the local speech model in Settings → AI → Transcription (about 240MB, one-time; after that it works offline).
  • In the list window you can re-transcribe, tidy up with AI, fix typos, add a title, or import existing audio files.
  • While recording, the menu bar icon turns into a red dot. Click it to go back to Quick Notes.
  • Choose where files go under "Save To". Put them in a synced folder to read them on your other computers.

Voice Typing

Hold a key and speak. When you let go, the cleaned-up text is typed where your cursor is. Good for messages and emails.

  1. Go to Settings → AI → Voice Typing, turn on "Enable Voice Typing", and follow the setup guide to grant microphone and Accessibility access and get the speech model.
  2. By default, hold the right ⌘ to talk and release to type. Click "Change Key" to use ⌃ ⌥ ⇧ or Fn instead. If you use Fn, set "Press 🌐 key to" to "Do Nothing" in System Settings.
  3. By default, an AI model cleans up your speech (drops "um" and "uh", splits paragraphs). If the model doesn't answer within a few seconds, your raw words are typed instead.
  4. Last text didn't paste? Press ⌃⌘V to paste it again. What you said is also saved under the "Voice" tag in clipboard history.

With less common keyboard layouts such as Dvorak, pasting may not work.

Media Tools

  • Drag images, GIFs or videos (mp4, mov) into the window, or right-click "Media Tools" in the clipboard or Finder.
  • Images: convert to JPEG / HEIC, limit the longest side and quality, or just set a maximum file size.
  • Video Pro: shrink to 1080p / 720p, encode with HEVC for smaller files, trim the start and end, save chosen frames as images.
  • GIF Pro: lower the frame rate, compress hard, export a video clip as a GIF.

ID Photo

Drop in a front-facing photo. The background is cut out and replaced with white, blue or red, and the photo is cropped to standard sizes such as 1-inch, 2-inch, small 1-inch and large 1-inch. You can cap the file size (for example, a sign-up site that wants under 50KB), then click "Save as Image…".

PDF Tools

Drag in images and PDFs to merge them into one PDF. Drag to reorder, rotate or delete pages. Image pages can be laid out as A4, Letter or original size. For encrypted PDFs you'll be asked for the password.

Scanner Pro

Scan straight from your all-in-one printer. Choose flatbed or document feeder, single or double-sided, color / gray / black and white, and resolution. Save as images or as one PDF. It works with the same devices as the system's Image Capture app. For network scanners, allow Ledge to access the local network.

Disk Tools

  • Space Analysis: a block chart shows how much space each folder takes. Bigger blocks use more space. Click to zoom in, double-click a folder to look inside, and move what you don't need straight to the Trash. To see every folder, give Ledge "Full Disk Access".
  • Speed and Health Pro: test your drive's read and write speed, and check its health info.

Speed Up Pro

"Free Up Now" frees memory. "Deep Clean" goes further and asks for your Mac password. The "Top CPU" list below refreshes every 2 seconds. When things are slow, see what's using the CPU and click "Quit" to close it. Hold ⌥ while clicking to force quit.

Cleaner Pro

  • Junk Cleanup: caches, logs, the Trash, leftovers from developer tools, old iPhone backups, browser cache and history, and leftovers from apps you've removed. Check what you want to clean, then clean.
  • App Uninstaller: drag an app in to delete it along with its files scattered around the system. Files in your user folder go to the Trash, so you can get them back. Files in system folders are deleted right away and need your password; they are unchecked by default.
  • Login Items: see what starts when your Mac boots, and turn off what you don't need.
  • Context Menu: manage Finder extensions and Quick Actions, and fix the same app showing up several times in "Open With".
  • Some items can only be found with "Full Disk Access" turned on.

Battery

When your MacBook stays plugged in, keep the charge around 80% so the battery ages more slowly. Apple silicon Macs only.

  • The first time, you need to install a "helper", which asks for your Mac password. It runs in the background and keeps controlling charging even when Ledge is closed.
  • Charge Limit: 20% to 100%, 80% by default. You can keep the Mac from sleeping until it reaches the limit.
  • Sailing Mode: only start charging again once the charge drops a few percent below the limit, to avoid lots of tiny top-ups.
  • Heat Protection: stop charging when the battery gets hotter than your set value (35°C by default).
  • Calibration: runs "charge to full → drain to 15% → charge to full → hold 1 hour → back to the limit" so the charge reading is more accurate. Keep it plugged in the whole time. It takes about half a day, and the Mac won't sleep meanwhile.
  • Schedule: for example, charge to 100% every Sunday, or the night before a trip.
  • You can show a battery icon in the menu bar. Right-click it to quickly charge to full, discharge or pause management.

Network Tools Pro

  • Traffic Monitor: how much bandwidth each app is using right now and where it connects (you can see it on a map). Turn on "Show Network Speed in Menu Bar" to see live upload and download speed there; click it to see recent network activity.
  • Traffic History: how much data each app used each day.
  • Get notified when a new app goes online for the first time, so you can spot apps that connect quietly.
  • Block List: block ad and tracking addresses.
  • Protection: encrypted DNS, per-app rules for the system firewall, stealth mode.
  • Connection Repair: when you can't get online, check everything with one click, and as needed flush the DNS cache, renew the IP address, restart the network adapter or clear proxy settings.
  • DNS Check: test common DNS servers to find the fastest, and switch to it with one click.
  • Hosts Editor: manage entries one by one or edit the raw text. A backup is made before each change, so you can restore it if something breaks.
  • Writing hosts and repairing the network ask for your Mac password.

Lucky Draw

For company parties and events. Import a name list, set up prizes, and run the draw full screen on a big display. Space starts / stops, Return draws the next batch, F goes full screen, ← → switch prizes. Winners can be exported as a spreadsheet. Not sure what to fill in? Click "Load Example" first.

Local Control API

For command-line tools on this Mac (such as Claude Code): read and write clipboard history, upload to image hosting and scan disks through a URL. It's at the bottom of the Toolbox page, where you can turn it on or off, change the port, and copy or regenerate the token. It only accepts connections from this Mac itself, and requests from web pages are refused. Most people can ignore it.

Cloud

Settings → Cloud, with three tabs at the top: "Image Hosting", "File Box" and "Sync"

Multi-Mac Sync Pro

Sync settings, clipboard text and image hosting records between your Macs. Data is stored in a place you choose and never goes through Ledge's servers. Sync is not available during the trial. For more, see the Sync page.

  1. Turn on "Sync Across Macs".
  2. Choose where to store it:
    • iCloud Drive: nothing to fill in. Just sign in to the same Apple Account on each Mac (first turn on iCloud Drive in System Settings → Apple Account → iCloud). You can also click "Choose…" to use a local sync folder from Dropbox or Jianguoyun instead.
    • WebDAV: enter the server address, account and app password. For Jianguoyun the address is https://dav.jianguoyun.com/dav/, and the password must be an app password created under Jianguoyun's "Security Options", not your login password.
    • GitHub Gist: enter a token with only the gist scope. The first Mac creates a secret gist automatically; on other Macs, enter the same token. Images can't be synced this way.
  3. Click "Test Connection". When you see "Connected, can read and write", you're done. Do this once on each Mac.
  • What syncs: settings, clipboard text and links (including pinned ones) and image hosting records sync by default. Clipboard images don't sync by default; when turned on, single images over 10MB are skipped. Files in the clipboard don't sync.
  • When settings differ: by default the latest change wins. You can switch to "Let Me Choose", or set this Mac to "Upload Only, Don't Receive".
  • Sync Passphrase: with a passphrase, everything synced is encrypted. Every Mac must use the same passphrase. Sensitive settings such as API keys and image hosting keys only sync when a passphrase is set. A forgotten passphrase can't be recovered, only reset.
  • When it syncs: when Ledge opens, every 5 minutes, 30 seconds after you stop changing settings, or when you click "Sync Now". It isn't real-time. To copy on one Mac and paste right away on another, use Keyboard & Mouse Sharing.
  • After getting settings from another Mac, things like the menu bar and shortcuts take effect after you restart Ledge.
  • The "Other Macs" list shows when each one last synced. For an old Mac you no longer use, click "Remove" to delete its sync files.

Image Hosting Pro

Upload an image and get a link you can paste into docs or forum posts.

  1. Pick a service under "Default Host" and fill in its details below. Supported: SM.MS, GitHub, Alibaba Cloud OSS, Tencent Cloud COS, Qiniu, Upyun, Imgur, and self-hosted ones such as Lsky Pro, EasyImage and Chevereto (choose "Custom Host").
  2. Click "Test Upload" to make sure it works.
  3. To upload: right-click an image in the clipboard and choose "Upload to Image Host", or set shortcuts for "Upload Clipboard Image" and "Capture and Upload" in Settings → Shortcuts → Image Hosting.
  4. When it's done, the link is copied for you. Formats: Markdown, HTML, plain URL, UBB or your own.
  • The "Naming Template" sets the uploaded file name. Mix date, original file name and random characters.
  • "Open Image Album…" shows everything you've uploaded. You can copy links or delete the online copy (on GitHub, deleted files can still be found in the commit history).
  • Keys for each service are stored only on this Mac.
  • An Alibaba Cloud OSS bucket needs public read, and a GitHub repo must be public, or others can't open the images.

File Box Pro

Drop a file on a FileCodeBox server, and the other person downloads it with a pickup code. No need to add each other as contacts.

  • First enter the server address under "File Box" (your own FileCodeBox or a friend's), then click "Test Connection".
  • Send: right-click a file, image or text in the clipboard and choose "Send to File Box". You get a pickup code and link to send to the other person. It lasts 1 day by default; choose anything from 1 hour to forever, or "Burn After Reading" (can be picked up only once).
  • Pick Up: go to Toolbox → File Box Pickup and enter the code. Files are saved to Downloads by default.

LAN File Sharing Pro

In Toolbox → HTTP Share. Pick a folder and click "Start Sharing". Scan the QR code with a phone on the same Wi-Fi to browse and download the folder's files in the phone's browser. The first time, macOS asks whether to allow local network access. Choose Allow, or your phone can't connect.

AI Settings

Settings → AI

Ledge doesn't include an AI service. It uses your own AI model account, or Ollama or LM Studio running on your Mac. The drop-down has presets for OpenAI, DeepSeek, SiliconFlow, Alibaba Cloud Model Studio, Zhipu and more. Pick one and enter your API key.

AI Model

Enter the Base URL, API key and model name (anything that works with the OpenAI format will do; local Ollama doesn't need a key). This model is used for AI translation, Selection Actions, Work Journal daily reports, tidying Quick Notes, and cleaning up Voice Typing text.

Selection Actions Pro

Select some text in any app and press the shortcut (set it in Settings → Shortcuts → AI). An "AI Actions" window opens with four built-in actions: Translate, Polish, Explain This Code and Summarize. Translate switches between Chinese and English by default, or you can choose a target language. You can edit the prompts of built-in actions, or click "Add Action…". In a prompt, {text} stands for the selected text. Without Accessibility access, the clipboard content is used instead.

Search by Meaning Pro

"Semantic" and "Hybrid" search in the clipboard rely on the "Semantic Engine" here:

  • System Model (default): built into macOS, works offline, nothing to install.
  • CoreML Model: more accurate for Chinese. Click "Import from File…" or enter a download URL to install. Recommended: bge-small-zh-v1.5 (Chinese) or multilingual-e5-small (mixed Chinese and English).
  • Remote API: uses the online service set in "Embedding" above.

After switching engines, your history is reprocessed in the background. With lots of items, this takes a while.

Image Recognition

Set the online engine for "Recognize Text" on clipboard images: a vision model (if left empty, the AI model account above is used), or MinerU (click "Get Token" to apply on the MinerU website). Without either, on-device recognition still works.

Transcription

  • Method: Local (recommended; first click "Install" for the model, about 240MB. If the download is slow, choose a mirror in China. After that, recordings never leave your Mac), or Remote (OpenAI, SiliconFlow, Groq and others; each recording must be under 24MB).
  • Recording language is "Auto" by default, and mixing Chinese, English and Cantonese is fine. You can also fix it to Mandarin, Cantonese, English, Japanese or Korean.
  • You can turn on "Fix Typos with AI After Transcribing" (sentences you edited by hand are left alone) and "Auto Title After Recording".
  • Hotwords: add names, product names and technical terms you say often, and recognition gets more accurate. Group them by field and check the groups you need.
  • Recordings can be denoised, using Apple's built-in method by default.

Voice Typing

See Toolbox → Voice Typing.

FAQ

I picked an item but nothing was pasted?

Most likely Accessibility access is off or no longer valid. Check its status in Settings → General → Permissions, and if it isn't granted, click "Request Access…". If it's already on and still doesn't work, remove Ledge from the list in System Settings, add it again, then restart Ledge.

Nothing happens when I press ⌘⇧C?

It may clash with another app's shortcut. Try a different combination in Settings → Shortcuts → Clipboard → Open. You can also just click the scissors icon in the menu bar.

I can't find the Ledge icon in the menu bar?

It may be hidden behind the notch, or you may have ⌘-dragged it out of the menu bar. Open Ledge from Applications, press ⌘⇧C, click "Preferences…" at the bottom of the popup, and turn "Show Menu Bar Icon" back on in Appearance. If too many icons are hiding it, use menu bar icon tidying.

Things I copy in a certain app aren't saved?

First check whether "Ignored Apps", "Ignored Types" or "Ignored Regex" in History & Privacy excludes it. Then check whether recording is paused (the menu bar icon looks different; hold ⌥ and click to resume). Passwords copied from password managers are skipped on purpose.

No Ledge menu when I right-click in Finder?

Make sure Ledge is in the Applications folder and its Finder extension is turned on in System Settings. See Turn On the Finder Context Menu. After changing it, reopen the Finder window.

Where is clipboard history stored? How much space does it use?

Only on this Mac. You can see how much space it uses in History & Privacy → Storage. Without sync, nothing is uploaded anywhere. To move to a new Mac, use "Export History…" and "Import…".

Search by meaning doesn't work?

Semantic and hybrid search are Pro features. Without Pro, it falls back to normal keyword search. Also, newly copied items need a moment to be processed in the background; they're usually searchable within a few seconds.

Will I lose my data when the trial ends?

No. Clipboard history, sticky notes and settings all stay. Only Pro features are paused, and they come back as soon as you buy and activate Pro.

I got a new Mac. What about my license?

Paste the same license into Settings → Ledge Pro on the new Mac to activate it. One license works on up to 3 of your own Macs.

How do I fully uninstall?

First quit Ledge (open the popup and press ⌘Q). If you used Battery, click "Remove Helper" there first. Then drag Ledge from Applications to the Trash. To delete your data too, also delete the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Ledge.

Still need help?

Email support@ledgetools.com. It helps to include your macOS version, Ledge version (shown in Settings → General) and screenshots.
